I found this to be so encouraging.  Sometimes, we feel powerless or think that we are “stuck,” yet we have the power to create our own spirit within our daily lives to rise above those issues that cause our ego to feel pain.   Our choice is to remain among the bitter, or become one such person seeing them seemingly getting ahead by their bad behavior, or raise our standards above what others may understand.  It is for us, not for them, however, if our example should happen to lift another, we are more fortunate for that opportunity to be of courage and understanding.

The Machane Yehuda market in Jerusalem, Israel is a treasure trove of teas, candies, spices, breads, fruit, and vegetables.  The brilliant colors and expansive trove of choices awakens the senses and the breadth of options opens to the excitement of cooking possibilities.

Open market stalls beckon shoppers to luxuriate and sample the many varietals.  Custom mixes to adorn salads and sweeten teas embrace all ethnicities and cultures.

Looking back at my many photos, how I wish I could amble there once again! The privilege to select the choicest and freshest dried fruits, nuts, and seasonings is sorely missed.

life creating ourselves_george bernard shaw

In developing who we are, we review what we have become and determine if we like it or not.  If we resolve to make changes, then we are learning to choose who we want to be.

Things don’t always turn out the way that we hope.  How many people actually end up working in the field that they were educated in?  Life is not a straight line and we come up against experiences that we couldn’t have expected to happen.

We don’t have the luxury of necessarily having a job that “makes us happy” because we have to put food on the table and keep a roof over our family’s head.  Happy in the workplace is a luxury that is hard to afford for most.

Those things that can make us happy are active choices outside of  our daily duties.  They are the people with whom we spend time, the hobbies that we enjoy, and skills we set out to learn.  We become a fully rounded person by choice, not circumstance.

Choice is what gives us freedom when duty keeps us in place.

In rediscovering old hobbies, I am choosing to bake once again. Reading has always been one of my favorite joys as it provides an escape from overthinking or anxiety when stressors feel too strong.  Reading can broaden our minds and give us an opportunity to think and examine how we feel about the idea.   Once an idea has caught our imagination, our thoughts are turning it around and creating new ways to embrace it.

Not every idea will turn out well, but our connection to each other, and within ourselves, broadens the horizons we set each day.
