life creating ourselves_george bernard shaw

In developing who we are, we review what we have become and determine if we like it or not.  If we resolve to make changes, then we are learning to choose who we want to be.

Things don’t always turn out the way that we hope.  How many people actually end up working in the field that they were educated in?  Life is not a straight line and we come up against experiences that we couldn’t have expected to happen.

We don’t have the luxury of necessarily having a job that “makes us happy” because we have to put food on the table and keep a roof over our family’s head.  Happy in the workplace is a luxury that is hard to afford for most.

Those things that can make us happy are active choices outside of  our daily duties.  They are the people with whom we spend time, the hobbies that we enjoy, and skills we set out to learn.  We become a fully rounded person by choice, not circumstance.

Choice is what gives us freedom when duty keeps us in place.

In rediscovering old hobbies, I am choosing to bake once again. Reading has always been one of my favorite joys as it provides an escape from overthinking or anxiety when stressors feel too strong.  Reading can broaden our minds and give us an opportunity to think and examine how we feel about the idea.   Once an idea has caught our imagination, our thoughts are turning it around and creating new ways to embrace it.

Not every idea will turn out well, but our connection to each other, and within ourselves, broadens the horizons we set each day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HAPPINESS

“When you find out what makes you happy — and it can be something as detailed as a long-term goal or it can be something as simple as the way I feel when my son smiles — you should know that happiness is your birthright. It’s a reaction to something.”

— Pharrell Williams, at the UN on March 20, 2015

When our heart and mind reach out to someone or something – this is empathy. We not only realize what brings us joy, but we pay attention when someone else shows us what it means to him or her. In reacting, and listening, we learn about ourselves and others. We appreciate the differences and methods to define happiness as individuals and a collective union of like-minded others.

A commitment to awareness, change, hope, and a renewed faith in ourselves and others generates a response to the questions:

What is happiness for me?

How can I bring it to someone else?”

What does happiness mean to you?

Daily dawns another day;
I must up, to make my way.
Though I dress and drink and eat,
Move my fingers and my feet,
Learn a little, here and there,
Weep and laugh and sweat and swear,
Hear a song, or watch a stage,
Leave some words upon a page,
Claim a foe, or hail a friend-
Bed awaits me at the end.”

Zen Scribbles

I love bread as much as the next person, though I admit I don’t see why it should set the bar for all inventions from 1928 until now. There have been many great inventions since that year (such as mobile phones and the internet!), but to be fair to sliced bread, I’m going to stick to the food category.  So let’s step back through time – there’s a nasty war between 1939 and 1945 that you might want to avoid – and see what other fantastic foods have been invented since sliced bread.

mike-n-ikeIn 1940, the delicious candy known as Mike and Ike was first introduced. Now I don’t know about you, but I have yet to come across any jelly beans that taste better than this. They’re extremely chewy and full of flavour. I especially love the Berry Blast, Jolly Joes and Zours varieties, and it’s not uncommon for…
