courage commitment to begin

There are a lot of weary people out there, so tired of fighting for truth, justice, and love.  They have been beaten down at work and at home.  They have had their spirits wounded and carry that pain with them.

We live in a world where the idea of might makes right is actually rhetoric, dogged determination to crush another’s spirit, massive machinations and double dealing.   It is not enough to hurt someone, they must be conquered and vanquished as if this life were a Game of Thrones or some duel to the death scenario.

I keep hearing of those empathetic and sensitive souls, who in their idealism, have ended up trapped in lives with toxic and selfish people.  Ironically, these people want an end to conflict and will destroy themselves to create loving and collaborative relationships.  Sadly, even that is not enough for abusive or narcissistic people.  Seeing the frustration and tears, pushed to the breaking point, is actually part of the pleasure they derive.

Yet, there is great force in these underdogs.  They push themselves in silent strength and hopeful optimism that each day will be a new beginning with a desire for a more positive change in their lives.  This level of pushing at windmills, such brave and exhausting demands, coupled with determination to live their best life in all of its attendant colors, is nothing short of dynamic courage.

To each of you who begin each day afresh, keep your commitment to yourself and an improved life as a testament to your powerful efforts in a harsh world.  You are weary from the fight, but work harder than most to bring your light to others to create new beginnings for all.  Keep seeking those moments where you can breathe deeper, heal, and embrace the characteristics of kindness and compassion.  You have worked hard and you deserve them.

There is so much planning in creating a trip so unique from your regular routine.  There is an anxiety about work, the flights and details, perhaps, a language barrier.  Yet, when months of anticipation have led to an actual experience, a thousand different moments and sights crystallize into a unique treasure box of memories in the brain.  When the lid is opened, colors and sounds coalesce to create a private escape.

A new destination creates awareness of a whole new way of being, living, and processing.  It is so expansive, it is hard to believe that others have not changed during that time.  Time has passed! Haven’t you thought, heard, considered, determined, observed?  Have you changed at all or any of the things that you have done?

But, it is I who have changed, for I am not willing to tolerate the mediocre once my mind has been opened to new possibilities of adventure and appreciation.  The journey continues within to push me forward to new destinations and stories with a new ending.

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller

We are on the precipice of a great and glorious future….. or so many commencement addresses have begun, or enticements to war.  At the start of a new job or a major life change, we stand at the steep edge of one position to make a great leap into another and untried experience.

Change can be good, yet many of us have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to leave a bad situation to head into a new unknown.  Stepping out of a comfort zone is scary even when it is good for us.  We do stay in situations that are unhealthy, unproductive, and stagnant.  Some of our best skills and inherent traits go unused because they are undervalued or underexposed.

Yet, it is scary to step off that ledge into the vast abyss of doubt, fear, anxiety, and start anew. By nature, we are optimistic that things will work out, or money will arrive, or our health will hold out, or untested faith that all will occur rightly, as it should.

Taking chances, or choosing something new in our life, tests our endurance mentally and physically.  Despite the fear, there are the brave few who leap ~ precariously, judiciously, respectfully, and forcefully, to create change.  Embracing achievement and expanding our horizons means taking that first step.  But, it can be the start of something incredible and no matter how big, starts with that first shaky step to land on the other side of optimism, and simply begin…
