explore. dream. discover.jpg

Exploration is so often linked to travel to distant places.  Yet, exploration of the self is a commitment to that distance as well.

It is easier for some to run away, to turn, to keep busy, to occupy, to plan, or escape rather than search inside themselves.

Memories and habits are limited, or measured in a harsh light, and the preparation to understand ourselves and our reactions to things is something we would rather not delve into too deeply.

quote_carl jung_who looks inside awakes

For me, there is so much to explore in the brain and personality, yet we have so little information.  Each person is a universe of billions of cells and neurons that we have yet to discover.  In the scheme of things, we know so little with limited ways to learn about ourselves and others.

Possibilities and options – different ways of thinking, being, and doing – is a way to explore each day without leaving home.  There is no equipment or packing needed, and no travel to faraway places, to explore in the reflection of the mind, accountability and development of self, and our relationships with others.

quote_patience seeing past the emotion

When I saw the daily prompt word, many thoughts came to mind that combined patience, compassion, empathy….  and then considered that if I considered myself to be patient on occasion, my family would argue loudly that it just isn’t so.

So, then I chose to look up the official definition of “patience” to see if I might ever qualify.

noun
1. the quality of being patientas the bearing of provocation, annoyance, misfortune, or pain,without complaint, loss of temper, irritation, or the like.
2. an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay:

to have patience with a slow learner.
3. quiet, steady perseverance; even-tempered care; diligence: to work with patience.

In the work that I do, I try very hard to have patience with some of those I encounter because they need my compassion.  With others, there is arrogance or entitlement or other characteristics that set me ticking, but as I withhold my tongue, doesn’t that count as patience too?

If one of the definitions is perseverance, then there is a history of patience.  Some may call it perseverance (and have quite kindly); to others it is stubbornness to step aside.  Long-term histories with people and places, despite many ups and downs, is an endeavor to apply perseverance in the form of a long term commitment to continue moving forward.

Saying a brief prayer before my philanthropic meetings for patience and compassion is a commitment as well to try to be fully present for those in front of me struggling with many tests of faith and existence.  When I have been complemented on my patience and how I spoke with them, I have let them know that there are those at home who would disagree…..

We each have a certain amount of patience and it comes out at different times. For me, it may not be when I am driving, nor when the level of nonsense and untruth exceeds my barometer for tolerance of such things, yet it is there for making a dough or searching for just the right recipe.

There is patience in trying to learn or continually consider, through introspection and thought, how to improve the quality of my life or myself.  It has been a long time and I still have much to learn and have not given up that search.

Trying to bite my tongue when someone is upset, or will not be convinced of my merit if I try to explain, is a form of patience.  It is allowing the other person to continue to express their opinion whether I agree with it or not.  It is a commitment to keep moving forward with a relationship that is meaningful to me and hoping that in time all will continue to improve.

life creating ourselves_george bernard shaw

In developing who we are, we review what we have become and determine if we like it or not.  If we resolve to make changes, then we are learning to choose who we want to be.

Things don’t always turn out the way that we hope.  How many people actually end up working in the field that they were educated in?  Life is not a straight line and we come up against experiences that we couldn’t have expected to happen.

We don’t have the luxury of necessarily having a job that “makes us happy” because we have to put food on the table and keep a roof over our family’s head.  Happy in the workplace is a luxury that is hard to afford for most.

Those things that can make us happy are active choices outside of  our daily duties.  They are the people with whom we spend time, the hobbies that we enjoy, and skills we set out to learn.  We become a fully rounded person by choice, not circumstance.

Choice is what gives us freedom when duty keeps us in place.

In rediscovering old hobbies, I am choosing to bake once again. Reading has always been one of my favorite joys as it provides an escape from overthinking or anxiety when stressors feel too strong.  Reading can broaden our minds and give us an opportunity to think and examine how we feel about the idea.   Once an idea has caught our imagination, our thoughts are turning it around and creating new ways to embrace it.

Not every idea will turn out well, but our connection to each other, and within ourselves, broadens the horizons we set each day.

travel quote_pat conroy

There is so much planning in creating a trip so unique from your regular routine.  There is an anxiety about work, the flights and details, perhaps, a language barrier.  Yet, when months of anticipation have led to an actual experience, a thousand different moments and sights crystallize into a unique treasure box of memories in the brain.  When the lid is opened, colors and sounds coalesce to create a private escape.

A new destination creates awareness of a whole new way of being, living, and processing.  It is so expansive, it is hard to believe that others have not changed during that time.  Time has passed! Haven’t you thought, heard, considered, determined, observed?  Have you changed at all or any of the things that you have done?

But, it is I who have changed, for I am not willing to tolerate the mediocre once my mind has been opened to new possibilities of adventure and appreciation.  The journey continues within to push me forward to new destinations and stories with a new ending.

“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” – Henry Miller
